With only four days left until the final climax of Manchester United’s football season and their Champions League final clash against Barcelona at Wembley this Saturday, Fergie is expected to address the matter later today. The issue poses a huge test of Giggs’s experience and Ferguson’s ability to galvanise his squad for Saturday.
You may have noticed in Tuesday Morning Spice that Giggs was named in Parliament by Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming on Monday afternoon.
Mainstream media immediately foamed at the mouth and the incident prompted the publication of his identity in media that had previously restrained from repeating allegations of the alleged affair.
Ferguson and the entire Manchester United squad are scheduled to appear at an open media day at Carrington in Trafford today.
It’s understandably thought highly unlikely that Giggs will attend and it’s also uncertain whether he will take part in Gary Neville’s testimonial match against Juventus at Old Trafford later this evening.
It’s also expected that Fergie won’t address any questions about the subject directly and instead deflect any attention the matter receives to a focus on the club’s objective of beating Barca.
The club’s officials refused to engage with the topic on Monday night because of the sensitivity over breaching the terms of the injunction, and it is thought the manager will take the same approach.
Giggs trained as normal on Monday with all the players who did not play in Sunday’s 4-2 defeat of Blackpool, and although it was awkward when he went up to receive his winner’s medal and lift the trophy along with his teammates, it was clear the club’s fans still worship the Welshman.
Giggs is the most successful player in United’s history, having amassed 12 league titles and two Champions Leagues. His 875 appearances for United since his debut in March 1991 also mark him out as the club’s longest-serving player.
It’s not the way he would have wanted his season to end but with it seeming likely that he will play on Saturday, hopefully he can add to his four goals from 37 appearances thus far this season.
