Johannes Coetzee is, or at the very least, was, a follower of Harold Camping.
Camping is the 89 year-old engineer-turned-quack-numero-prophet who predicted – by means of complex and completely arbitrary formulae, that the world would end in 1994.
When that didn’t happen, he went away for a bit, thanked his lucky stars that social media hadn’t taken off in a big way, and made a strong return in 2009. Camping’s Family Radio media organization launched a virulent media campaign, proclaiming the date of the end of the world to be May 21, 2011.
For the record, that date’s in the past, in case you’re a particularly oblivious human.
Johannes Coetzee took up the mantle of spreading Camping’s prophecy throughout the southern African region. And on Friday night, he and 50 other May 21 doomsday prophets booked in to the Devonshire Hotel in Braaimfontein ahead of their impending float up to the ether.
At R689 for a single, and R1 178 for a double room per night, one may be forgiven for thinking that Coetzee and his mates were planning on skapering on a fairly significant hotel bill.
Johannes now finds himself in the triply unfortunate position of being let down by an 89 year-old quack numerologist, paying a bill he never thought he’d be left with, and having to delete his Facebook profile.
