Following the ANCYL’s attempt at taking the DA to court over unenclosed toilets in the Western Cape, ANC Free State secretary Sibongile Basani admitted yesterday that the ANC had been aware of the same problem in the Rammulotsi, an area under ANC control, “in July last year.” This despite the party’s frequent claims of ignorance; Free State Premier Ace Magashule insists “we only found out about it this week.”
But it gets better! So much better. See, Basani followed up his confession that the ANC knew that they had failed to provide adequate sanitation in the municipalities under their purview – which is the subject of a Human Rights Commission report – by letting us know that
We immediately gave the order that the municipality enclose the toilets. By the end of December last year, 200 of the toilets had already been enclosed.
And who got the cushy contract for the construction of 200 enclosed toilets? The mayor of Maghoka municipality’s company! Great job, insider trading.
Meanwhile, ANC spokespeople keep saying that they had no idea what was going on – because given the choice between blind incompetence and culpable apathy, it’s best to go with the position of least responsibility.
Jackson Mthembu, ANC national spokesperson, shows us the way:
Do you know how many things we have to handle every day in Luthuli House? Do you have any idea? I am telling you now we didn’t know about it.
A survey published last week by Statistics South Africa, showed that 5.9% of the houses in the country have no toilets or bucket toilets as of 2010.
