Just like every other newspaper in the US, in recent days Brooklyn-based Hasidic newspaper Vos Iz Neias has published the ‘Situation Room’ photo of Barack Obama and his White House security team watching footage of the killing of Osama Bin Laden. Except this version of the photo had a notable difference – and it didn’t involve Princess Bea’s cupcake hat.
The Orthodox Jewish paper digitally removed State Senator Hillary Clinton from the picture because it is not allowed to publish pictures of women in accordance with laws of modesty. It’s a pity that the photo, which has quickly become iconic, had already been viewed all over the world and that the omission of Hillary in the foreground of the picture was rather obvious.
Another woman – Audrey Tomason, who works with the Security Council – was also erased from the back of the picture.
Apparently images of women are intentionally cut by the publication in case they could be considered sexually suggestive.
Could objections to images of women in power also have something to do with it?
The newspaper has since apologised, saying “We should not have published the altered picture, and we have conveyed our regrets and apologies to the White House and to the State Department”.
