Brazil’s Supreme Court last night ruled unanimously that civil unions between same-sex couples were to be allowed – which is a big deal, what with Brazil being home to the world’s largest Roman Catholic population and all.
The vote stopped short, however, of legalizing gay marriage, with Argentina and Mexico City being the only continental states to offer that right.
Said Macreclo Cerqueira, member of gay rights group ‘Grupo Gay da Bahia’ (which does what is says on the tin):
“This is a historic moment for all Brazilians, not just homosexuals. This judgment will change everything for us in society — and for the better. Gays, lesbians and transsexuals will be recognized as being more human. We’ll be more accepted by having our rights honored.”
It feels nice beating Brazil to something.
