Never one to shy away from saying things that might just come back to bite him, our national rugby coach and orator, Peter de Villiers, has pretty much called Sonny Bill Williams overrated. He’s also said that we’ll have him worked out come the World Cup.
In the Boland town of Wellington, de Villiers told journalists that we’ll have his number by the World Cup. You’ve got to admire the man’s guts.
I’m looking forward to seeing Sonny Bill against a Jean de Villiers and a Jaque Fourie, who can cut down (his) space … and on the inside you’ve got big, hard tackles coming in from a Schalk Burger.
See (whether) the boxer can box then, or the dancer can dance!
I’m not entirely sure if he is a dancer, but perhaps the always eloquent de Villiers knows something we don’t. I think it may have been a reference to Mohammed Ali, but who knows?
He then continued by saying that he noticed that Williams had lost the ball four times in the tackle against the Chiefs last week; a keen observation. The Crusaders did, however, win by 18 points.
We all know what this game’s about: any great star on the horizon … as soon as you are worked out, that is when your true character must come to the fore, said de Villiers
The problem is how long will it take for us to work out that he’s just one brilliant man in a team full of brilliant men?
Hopefully before the World Cup.
