Shrien Dewani, the man accused of orchestrating the murder of his wife in Cape Town last November, has been a patient at Priory Hospital for a number of weeks following an attempted suicide. He is undergoing treatment for severe post-traumatic stress syndrome.
This weekend, Shrien had an apparent “adverse reaction” to his medication, which resulted in a “heated discussion” with a fellow female patient. He was subsequently moved to Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke. This facility offers “a tranquil and therapeutic environment to provide care and treatment for those individuals with complex mental illness”.
Police would not say whether he is on suicide watch again, attacked anyone or was attacked himself. A source close to him, however, said that he merely had a reaction to his medication, which made him “loud and noisy.”
There was no fight or argument but one female resident got in a heated discussion with him and was taunting him and saying, ‘You should go back to South Africa’. In his mind he is confused as to what happened before he surrendered himself to police. He’s not certain.
Shrien gave himself up to police on Sunday and a judge ruled he should be moved to a new, “stricter”, hospital until he is fit for trial.
