Like most things in life, it’s not always the most talented that become household names. And while not necessarily as known as, say Steven Spielberg or Orson Welles, the impact a select few filmmakers have had on the global film industry is undeniable. Sidney Lumet one such director. If you’ve ever seen 12 Angry Men, Serpico, Murder on the Orient Express, or Network, you need to drink a toast to this guy.
He died on Saturday due to issues surrounding lymphoma.
While he never won an Oscar for films he directed, he was awarded an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2005. Al Pacino, who produced memorable performances for Lumet in both Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico, introduced the director at the 2005 Academy Awards.
Lumet worked with Hollywood’s biggest names, including Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Henry Fonda, Al Pacino, Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Robert Duvall, and Faye Dunaway.
Respect.
