In case the message hasn’t already been made abundantly clear, South Africa needs to embrace new energy sources – and quickly. Eskom can’t foresee our (yes, it affects everyone) power supply problem improving for the next five years.
Eskom announced this morning that South Africa will experience electricity shortages for the next five years, until two new power plants are available.
Already we are experiencing price increases of at least 25 percent year-on-year. This year electricity will cost you 25.8 per cent more than it did in 2010. As Africa’s biggest economy, we can’t afford to lose power but Eskom is battling to meet the demand.
Can we all embrace solar, wind and other energy sources as mainstream power resources, or are we too stuck in our ways?
