This was not a very difficult prediction to make, but I did kind of predict that this would happen. Our glorious rugby union has seen it fit to move the Springbok emblem off the front of the jersey, and have relegated it to the left sleeve for the World Cup. And today it has been unveiled for an already miserable South African public to see.
The “complication” arose as all teams at the World Cup have to have the World Cup logo on the right hand side of the jersey. And, as SARU recently saw it fit to move the Springbok to the right hand side of the jersey, and put a Protea in its place on the left, the Springbok now has nowhere to go during the World Cup.
Apparently SARU did ask the IRB for special permissioson to have the Springbok on the right-hand side, but, unsurprisingly the IRB said no. So instead of moving the Protea somewhere else, they’ve gone and stuck the Springbok on the sleeve.
I cannot believe – no wait, I can believe that this has happened. At no point in history has the Springbok been moved. And I venture to say that some in government might just push to keep the Springbok on the sleeve.
This is a sad indictment on South African sport and it is clear that politicians do not give a continental drift about the people who all own a share in this great South African institution.
