Government has decided that we need a new nickname for our national soccer team. The affectionate monicker Bafana Bafana was a nice idea at the time, says Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, but now we need ‘lions that will roar’.
I think it’s sad that such a familiar name – not to mention international brand – will be phased out, but apparently Safa will soon be asking South Africans to choose the team’s new nickname.
On the reason for the change, Mbalula comments, “If you are a Bafana Bafana, you can just be a boy next door who must bring water. Bafana Bafana was a very nice nickname when it was conceptualised.
“It’s a debate that must come to finality. We need lions that will roar. I’m not saying we must call the team The Lions. We don’t need elephants.”
Ok, well what do we need? Hmmm, any ideas?
