Last week I told you how the ACDP and FF+ are going about losing the gay vote in the upcoming elections. Not to be outdone, the ANC was seen campaigning at a funeral over the weekend in an attempt to win the award for most supporters lost by May 18.
You have to give this guy some credit for thinking out of the box – posters tied to lamp posts are getting old. But choosing a funeral to tell everyone to vote for the ANC is just plain wrong. Especially if the woman in the front row just lost her husband and seven-year-old triplets all in one go.
The politician in question is Jabu Hlophe, an ANC councillor in Mpumalanga. After shouting “Viva ANC” and “Amandla” at the funeral of Mandla Nkosi, Hlophe urged mourners to vote.
“We are busy with election work. Let’s honour comrade Mandla by voting. I believe we all know that on May 18 we must go to vote.”
Hlophe then went on to call the deceased man an MK member, despite the fact that he was a marshal during political rallies in the 1990s.
Finally, a family friend stood up and said: “Nkosi left this place in 1990. But now that he is dead, the ANC remembers him. They are even canvassing for votes during his funeral. It’s very wrong.” In response to this, an ANC member in a yellow party T-shirt holding a picture of President Jacob Zuma with the legend “Vote ANC” remarked, referring to Mkhwanazi: “He’s a traitor”.
