Chris Rock opines that all of us have at least one gay uncle. If that is the case, the ACDP and FF+, might have just lost a lot of votes in the upcoming elections. A motion for Parliament to congratulate South Africa’s new Mr. Gay World winner, Francois Nel, has been blocked by these two parties.

The “motion with notice” was proposed by the DA on Tuesday and submitted to all parties in Parliament. The motion congratulated Nel, who on Sunday became the second South African in a row to be crowned Mr. Gay World, and also noted that Johannesburg had been selected as the host for the 2012 pageant. These kinds of motions are regularly issued by Parliament, as was the case in this week’s motion congratulating the South African cricket team’s success at the World Cup over the weekend.

According to DA MP Gareth Morgan, the ACDP and the FF+ were the only two parties to object to the Mr. Gay World motion, effectively blocking it from going to the floor.

The reason for objecting? “Religious Views.”

I asked Coenie Kukkuk, host producer of Mr. Gay World 2012 in Johannesburg and one of the organisers of Pink Loerie 2011, what his thoughts were.

“Gay rights are human rights. Equality is for all, and not just for certain individuals. South Africa has a new world champion and both the ACDP and FF+’s actions are disgraceful. We hope the voters take note”.
