A “lack of discipline” is apparently to blame for over 20 000 police-issue weapons going missing since April 2004.
Top management in our extremely effective police force were asked yesterday in Parliament how they happened to lose 20 429 weapons.
According to Lieutenant-General Gary Kruser, head of procurement services, only 4 810 weapons were found again in the same time period. Nice.
It also seems that the top management couldn’t say what happened to cops who lost their weapons. I have an answer for you, um, nothing.
Even the ANC isn’t mute on the subject:
“The Firearms Control Act puts a huge responsibility on citizens but an official can lose one weapon, a second and a third weapon and still keep his firearm license. But if I lose my weapon, it is another matter,” said Annelize van Wyk of the ANC.
Police national personnel head, Lieutenant General Magda Stander responded by saying that the situation is “indeed worrying”.
Indeed it is.
