Shhh… Do you hear that? It’s the sound of hippies everywhere rejoicing at the new-school Volkswagen Kombi. The iconic vehicle, which first debuted in 1950, was a favorite at this week’s Geneva Motor Show and comes with a whole lot of new goodies.

Volkswagen is showing a concept version of the van, known by its German nickname – the Bulli, at the Geneva Auto Show. Among the six-seater’s modern twists: It’s powered by an electric motor and uses an iPad to control the entertainment system, climate control and other functions. The concept is slightly shorter and wider than the original, with a less boxy front. But there are plenty of nods to the original, including a three-person bench seat in the front and a two-tone paint job.

Dutch Volkswagen importer, Ben Pon, is the master mind behind the original Bulli, who sketched out a simple public bus built on the wheels of a Beetle, in 1947.

We all remember riding in the back of one of these classics at some point, on the way to the beach or simply cruising around town, having a sandwich. So even though Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed that the concept will go into production, they say the power of collective thought works wonders.
