The giant has realised a gap in the market with this new feature it’s adding to the existing structural layout of the site. Like you’d click on the left toolbar to access news or images, soon you’ll search for a recipe based on quite specific criteria. Even real chefs are amped.
There is a lot of technical search engine optimisation related jargon to the story but effectively the new search software is getting cleverer and cleverer. George Orwell machine clever.
Google’s product management director for search spoke about their approach to search:
We are still grasping for the Holy Grail of natural language search.
We take the approach that the internet exists, and it is so big and Wild West-like that you have to take it for what it is. It is this giant immutable thing that will do its own thing, despite what you want it to do.
With that in mind and the boundless searching you would normally do when looking for a recipe online, the new recipe search feature allows you to be precise with what you actually want.
In other words all the silly search results you don’t want should be omitted now.
Options like cooking duration, number of calories and ingredient variants to traditional recipes are among the new features built in too.
We’re fine with that.
