As a born and bred Joburger, this headline tastes like sweet justice. Looks like Jozi isn’t the only city that’s going to be klapped by the new tolling system. Capetonians are in for it too. See, that’s karma for you, you can’t have that mountain and stunning city without some repercussions.
If you’ve missed the whole brouhaha, Joburgers stand in line to be charged between 49,5c/km – R2,97/km for using some of the city’s bigger roads. Which basically means that many of us are going to torch our cars and place ourselves under self-induced house arrest.
The South African National Roads Agency Limited, my new arch nemesis, has instructed the implementation of tolls roads countrywide, and Western Cape Transport MEC Robin Carlisle said that tolls on the N1 and N2 in Cape Town are inevitable within the next two to three years.
However, take some comfort in the fact that Carlisle did indicate that the system would be different from Gauteng’s. So Capetonians better hope and pray that toll levies are less than Johannesburg’s, or we may have to resort to roller skates. No, forget that, they’ll probably charge you for that too.
