Eating out of dust bins has been all the rage here in South Africa for quite a while now and our rubbish is sorted by bergies long before it even reaches the recycling area back at the depot. Now, a certain Sasha Hall has been arrested in the UK for “theft by finding.”
The 21 year old had happily helped herself to a bunch of discarded food including waffles, pies and ham outside a Tesco branch in Essex but was later surprised and arrested at her home for the crime of “theft by finding.”
She had this to say of her culinary habits:
“I have lived healthily for several years on discarded food. I take my pick from sacks full of heavily packaged sushi, bread, ready meals and fruit, all perfectly edible but dumped as they go out of date.”
Hall will have to face a magistrate later this month but will probably have garnered enough support from her fellow freegans to have the case, tossed out.
Coincidentally, Tesco’s slogan is “Every Little Helps.”
