A new Thai airline, P.C. Air (appropriate that), is set to become the first airline in the world to employ openly transsexual flight attendants. Thailand is known for its tolerance of transvestites and transsexuals, known locally as ‘katoeys’ or ‘ladyboys’. But, up till now, the only jobs available to them have been in the beauty and ‘entertainment’ industries.
P.C. Air, which will fly to several Asian destinations starting in April, has already hired four ladyboys to form part of their cabin crew. However, it’s not going to be plain sailing for the ladyboys, as they will have to ensure that they keep up their feminine personalities at all times, with their voices and postures remaining naturally feminine throughout the flights.
According to company president, Peter Chan, they’ll also have to be very patient. A trait that will come in handy given all those passengers who’re going to keep requesting ‘a little something extra’ during those extended flights.
