U2 Wows Crowd In Johannesburg – “With a roar that could rival the one seen last week in Tahrir square, Cairo, (huh?) fans at the FNB Stadium last night gave U2 a rousing welcome. But unlike the relief of Egyptians at President Hosni Mubarak’s exit from his position, fans here were celebrating seeing their favourite band playing in their own back yard. And as lead singer Bono led the band up a stairway to the stage milking the applause and waving to all corners of the dimly lit cauldron, you knew why they’d sold over 150 million albums worldwide.” [timeslive]
Grammy Awards Full Of Surprises – The last-minute win by Arcade Fire for album of the year wasn’t the only upset at the 53rd Grammy Awards. Depending on whom you ask, the Black Keys pulled out two upsets on Sunday night. Though the rock duo’s 2010 album, “Brother,” was a critically acclaimed and winner of best packaging award, the band scooped up alternative album and rock performance by a duo or group with vocals, beating out Canada’s Arcade Fire (and their critically lauded disc, “The Suburbs”) twice. Pandora Internet Radio Looks Set To Raise $100 Million – Popular Internet radio service Pandora is tuning up for an IPO later this year. In documents filed Friday, Pandora indicated it would raise $100 million with an initial public offering stock. That figure will likely change as bankers gauge the demand to invest in or an 11-year-old company that has helped change the way people listen to music. A target price for the shares won’t be set until the IPO is closer to happening. The offering probably won’t happen for at least three months. [huffingtonpost]
Egypt’s Generals Impose Martial Law – Egypt’s generals imposed martial law on Sunday, dissolving parliament and suspending the constitution, moves that many of the protesters who helped topple President Hosni Mubarak said were necessary to excise a rotten form of government. The sweeping actions appeared to have their desired effect of calming the national mood. Under a celebratory facade, Egypt has remained on edge since Mubarak was forced to abdicate Friday, as uncertainty grew over the revolution’s next stages. [washingtonpost]
Apple Working On Less Pricey iPhone – Apple Inc. is working on the first of a new line of less-expensive iPhones and an overhaul of software services for the devices, people familiar with the matter said, moving to accelerate sales of its smartphones amid growing competition.
One of the people, who saw a prototype of the phone late last year, said it is intended for sale alongside Apple’s existing line. The new device would be about half the size of the iPhone 4, which is the current model. [wallstreetjournal]
Italian Women Golding Anti-Berlusconi Demonstrations – talian women have held protests nationwide and abroad against embattled Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Thousands of protesters marched in more than 60 towns and cities nationwide. Some women carried banners reading “Italy is not a brothel”, and said Mr Berlusconi had demeaned women with his recent sex scandals. The premier denies attending sex parties and consorting with prostitutes, labelling the claims “disgusting” and politically motivated. Chips, Silvio, these women are scorned, my boet. [bbc]
Local Doctor Drops His Wife For Annie Lennox – A Cape Town doctor has apparently left his wife and children for British pop star Annie Lennox. Britain’s Sun newspaper on Saturday reported that Aids gynaecologist Mitch Besser, 56, had already moved out of his Cape Town family home. Besser has received accolades for his work to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV and Aids. Besser and the former Eurythmics star, also 56, are said to have met two years ago through his charity, which helps HIV-positive mothers in Africa. [channel24]
Julian Assange Abused Man’s Cat – Daniel Domscheit-Berg accuses WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of many things in his book presented Thursday, but perhaps the oddest allegation is that he abused the former insider’s cat. “Ever since Julian lived with me in Wiesbaden he (the cat) has suffered from psychosis. Julian would constantly attack the animal. He would spread out his fingers like a fork and grab the cat’s throat.” Good Lord! [associated]
Animal Planet Goes In Search Of BigFoot – A national US cable television channel is sending a film crew to a national forest 75 miles from Charlotte to join a Salisbury man in his search for Bigfoot. The Animal Planet plans to document Michael Greene’s search for the creature, which Greene says he captured on videotape nearly two years ago. And Greene plans to lead an expedition of volunteers into the forest Saturday in hopes of finding Bigfoot. Good luck with that. [charlotteobserver]
Cape Town Halaal Restaurant Accused Oh Selling Non-Halaal Meat – Rumours about a popular halaal restaurant in central Cape Town have spread like the stench of old meat through much of the Muslim community. An e-mail claiming that Eastern Food Bazaar, a popular restaurant in the CBD that specialises in Indian and Eastern food, was not halaal and was lying about where it got its meat has spread like a virus. Yu! Good luck with that. [timeslive]
Billy Joel Responds To Elton John – Billy Joel has responded to Elton John’s comments this morning on the Today Show that the Piano Man “hates” him for his recent comments in Rolling Stone. “He sent me a message and he’s not happy,” John told Matt Lauer. “He may want to punch my face. I understand that. I’m sorry I had to say it, but I’m saying it because I really want Billy to live a long life and be very happy. That’s all it came from. I understand why he’s mad at me. I’m only trying to help. Maybe I should have done it privately, but I’ve been so frustrated over the years.” [rollingstone]

The deployment marks the first time South Africa has sent a ship to take part in anti-piracy operations, and follows international pressure on the key regional player to step up its role in the fight against piracy. The ship, the SAS Mendi, will join five other frigates and 18 smaller boats in the operation, SABC said. Nice. [newage]
