John W. Philips, a 54 year old man from what can only be America, has been arrested and convicted of having sex with a 13 year old girl, whom he met and “married” in an online game.

John is likely to go from 13 year old “girlfriends” to “boyfriends” named Pappa, rather more quickly than he would have liked. I use the words boyfriend and girlfriend sparingly because hey, rape probably isn’t the strongest indicator of a healthy, consensual relationship.

Had I not told you he was a paedophile, would you have guessed it? Say yes.

Phillips was an avid online gamer, and skilled in the child’s game art of Magic: The Gathering. Sadly, however, it seems that a loss of touch with reality is a common symptom amongst heavy online gamers. I did a random search for “World of Warcraft Players” online and found these champions. If any of these images make you shift uncomfortably in your chair, you are normal.

This guy’s new girlfriend is probably in grade 9 and listens to Slayer.

Enthusiasts who branch out into other areas of cosplay can be equally unnerving.
