Seems like $65 million and a soundtrack supplied by U2 doesn’t buy you good reviews. Although the show only opens on the 15th of March, most major critics have weighed in on the long awaited Spider-Man musical, and basically it’s complete crap.
Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the most expensive musical in broadway history, was slammed across the board, being described as: “grievously broken in every respect”, “a shrill, insipid mess”, as well as “inconsistent and maddening”. All of which is somewhat unsurprising given the slew of injuries and numerous delays that have plagued the production.
Oprah, on the other hand, has raved about the show. But Oprah also raved about Eat, Pray, Love so I’m not holding my breath.
Anyway, a spokesman hit back at the barrage of negative reviews, calling them “ridiculous and uncalled for”, going on to say that changes are still to be made.
Well they’ve got five weeks to fix this mess, but it seems like they’re gonna need an Oprah-sized miracle.
