I firmly believe that if people only knew about the gay habits of a certain actress on 7de Laan or a very popular Afrikaans stand-up comedian, homophobia could easily become a thing of the past. It’s all about realising that some of the people you really look up to also indulge in a taste of the other other meat. And what’s good enough for Gareth Cliff is good enough for your kid in school struggling to come up with a way to tell you he is gay. The same argument would apply to popular musicians.
One of the best sites for culture of this nature is After Elton, and they’ve just released a list of 50 of their Top 50 Gay Male Musicians. And while Elton John and Freddy Mercury unsurprisingly claim the top spots, there were some genuine surprises for me on that list. For instance, I think Vampire Weekend is pretty much one of the best things that have happened in music recently. How awesome then to learn that one of the members, Rostam Batmanglij (please note, he has the word “Batman” in his surname), bats for the other team. Same goes for Kele from Bloc Party and Jonsi from Sigur Rós. Hell, even hardcore mothers like Rob Halford (Judas Priest) and Chuck Panozzo (Styx) made their way on to the list. It’s like the holy grail (gayle?) of gay data!
You can view the full list here.
Anyone have a South African list?
