With the Radlantic continuing its game of lake-lake as far as Windguru will forecast (7 days ahead, actually), rumours of your plastic water bottle causing cancer are bound to peak. No doubt reaching for a sun exposed bottle of warm water will be met with upturned noses and precautionary words. So, hit them with the truth.
And this friends, is the cold hard truth about plastic water bottles: there is the likelihood that you are more exposed to cancer causing elements by administering any food or drink type into your body from a source, bottle or otherwise, containing the polycarbonate plastic Bisphenol A (BPA).
What is BPA? It’s a type of plastic used in the manufacturing process of anything from plastic water bottles to CD covers. In other words there is lank of it around. Low level exposure will typically be associated with consumption of food or drink that is stored in said manufactured item.
Should you be afraid? Not really. The main concern coming from the one half of scientists involved in the polarised debate about safety factors and BPA is that BPA contains estrogens, the dominant female hormone. Estrogens are linked to causing cancer and this is what the anxiety is about. That and man boobs.
The other half of the scientific community cleverly note that there are far more estrogenic properties found in substances like milk and soy products. Basically you probably absorb more estrogenic properties from those products than you do from plastic bottles, so chill.
What can you do? Scientist Dr Joe Schwarcz offers some awesome remedies: drink from glass bottles (especially for babies) and lay off that microwave food, come on, naughty.
