Murdoch’s The Daily Launches – In its first editorial, Rupert Murdoch’s iPad “newspaper” the Daily proclaims that “new times demand new journalism”. Murdoch has bet $30m (£18.6m) of News Corp’s money that his team can create that new journalism and steal a march on every other publisher. The Daily also represents a radical bet: that people who have become used to paying nothing for content online will be happy to pay 99¢ a week for an iPad newspaper. This is Murdoch’s gamble, and one which he is making in the face of much scepticism from his critics. [guardian]
Cyclone Stronger Than Katrina Hits Australia – Tropical Cyclone Yasi slammed into Australia’s northeast coast early today, ripping apart houses and cutting a swath through sugarcane crops. Yasi hit shore as a Category 5 cyclone at Mission Beach, a resort town of about 3,000 people 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) north of Brisbane, the Bureau of Meteorology said. The death and destruction authorities had feared was minimized as the larger cities of Cairns and Townsville escaped the brunt of the storm. [bloomberg]
The White Stripes Break-Up – In a surprise news posting on Jack White’s Third Man Records website, The White Stripes officially announced that they have broken up. “The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue,” the post reads. “Nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.” [rollingstone]

Several ambulances entered and left the square shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday. [cnn]
Lindsay Lohan Caught On Camera Stealing $2,500 Necklace – The ‘Mean Girls’ star was accused of stealing high-end jewelery, and cops issued a search warrant for her Venice Beach home. Luckily for LiLo, a friend of the actress turned the necklace, valued at $2500, in to the Pacific Division of the LAPD Tuesday night. Lt. Jeff Bert told RadarOnline.com, “If the LA county DA’s office files charges, it could be grand theft which is a felony.” [popeater]
Ex Facebook Guy Turns Down $100 Million For His Social Networking Site – ‘Path,’ which on Tuesday raised $8.5 million in funding, rejected a $100-million buyout offer from Google. Path is led by former Facebook executive Dave Morin and has a spiffy design team. A personal network that limits your connections to 50 friends, it has hundreds of thousands of users, not enormous by Silicon Valley standards. But 20% of those users are coming back every day. I like this guy. [latimes]

Elton John Reckons Billy Joel Needs Tough Love And Rehab – British singer Elton John has handed out some tough advice to his longtime friend and tour companion Billy Joel who has spent much of his career battling alcoholism: seek better treatment. “He’s going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab they’ve been light,” John told the magazine. “When I went to rehab, I had to clean the floors. He goes to rehab where they have TVs. I love you, Billy, and this is tough love.” [reuters]
Wall Street Pay Hits Record Levels – When it comes to paychecks, Wall Street’s law of gravity is back in full force: What goes down must come back up. In 2010, total compensation and benefits at publicly traded Wall Street banks and securities firms hit a record of $135 billion, according to an analysis by The Wall Street Journal. The total is up 5.7% from $128 billion in combined compensation and benefits by the same companies in 2009. [wallstreetjournal]
Rhino Horn Now More Valuable Than Gold – The insatiable demand for rhino horns from illegally killed animals in South Africa has doubled the price in southeast Asia, making the trophies worth more than their weight in gold. Poachers now see the rhinoceros as their way of getting rich quick. The price of rhino horns, which weigh 7kg on average, has increased to R400 000 a kilogram, outpacing gold for the first time in a decade. In London yesterday gold fixed at $1 345.50 an ounce, or R305 824 a kilogram. [iol]

NewsCorp Is Ready To Sell MySpace – In an earnings call today, News Corp. officially stated it plans to sell MySpace. During the call, COO Chase Carey said that “now is the right time” to attempt to place the social network “under a new owner.” Rumors of MySpace’s eventual sale to an entity outside the News Corp. family have been swirling for some time. But Carey’s confirmations in today’s call suggest News Corp., which bought MySpace in 2005 for $580 million, would prefer that sale happen sooner rather than later. [mashable]
James Cameron Took Home $257 Last Year – While nine-figure windfalls such as James Cameron’s and Johnny Depp’s are still rare, Hollywood’s post-crash aversion to $20 million paydays and gross-point deals seems to be easing. The fact that a mid-range star such as Vince Vaughn asked for—and got close to—$20 million to appear in The Dilemma proves that the big studios are once again hungering to shell out Goldman-like bonuses for (somewhat) proven commodities. As one studio executive put it, “We’re not trying to commit felonies here, just a few misdemeanors.” [vanityfair]
