Sometimes an octopus, a psychic german octopus to be specific, captures the imagination of the world. Paul was such a creature, successfully predicting the outcome of eight World Cup matches. Unfortunately little Paul passed away in his sleep last October, but fittingly a monument has been built in his honor, so our childrens children will never forget the clairvoyant mollusk.
The monument of Paul has been erected at Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, the same place where he lived his short but astounding life. The statue places Paul on top of a soccer ball, with his cremated ashes being tucked away in a gold-leaf-covered urn on the inside of the ball, which isn’t creepy or in any way ridiculous.
You’ll also be pleased to know that Paul’s successor, creatively named, Paul II, will continue his legacy during the 2012 European Championships. Fingers crossed he’s as prolific as Paul (the 1st that is), cause I’ll be betting my non-existent savings on him.
