Hang on a tick. I thought that calling anybody a loser was the prerogative of the person doing the loser calling. Not so, according to Mr C. Ngcukana, viewer of e.tv’s Justice Factor.
He laid a complaint with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission against Justice Factor’s presenter, Justice Malala, for calling President J.Z. a “loser” and naming him loser of the week. Jacob was called a loser for lobbying that sanctions against Zimbabwe be lifted. According to News24 he also complained about the accuracy of Malala’s comment that there was “no crisis” in Zimbabwe, a statement made by former president Thabo Mbeki.
I personally love Justice Malala and I want to have his babies. He is one of the very few commentators on South African politics that gets to the point and doesn’t attempt to cover his ass by attempting to see the situation from “the other person’s side”.
Should we all sit down and have a good ‘ol think about how what we say will make Robert Mugabe feel before we say it? Should I say to myself: “But Andrew, what about my all-knowing leader’s sensitive constitution? How will he react if he hears that I think he’s less than credible? ”
No, we shouldn’t and Justice doesn’t. And I think he’s a bit of a legend for doing so.
I remember with great fondness that he was one of the very few commentators on the last Zimbabwe “elections” that wasn’t trying to pretend that Mugabe could somehow be reasoned with.
I am glad that the Commission found that freedom of speech is still actually quite important, especially in an era where media self-censorship makes me want to step into traffic.
To Viewer C. Ngcukana I say: Poo to you loser.
