Strange. We just had one. As sad as this is, this is likely to unfortunately cement in international tourists’ subconscious that old cliche of Africa as beautiful and exotic, but dangerous. On the face of it there are some differences here to the Anni Dewani murder – the victim was strangled, not shot, and it happened in Mauritius, not Gugulethu. Nevertheless, the couple was on honeymoon. The wife got murdered, in Africa.
Michaela and John McAreavey got married two weeks ago and headed straight for The Legends Hotel in Mauritius for some lazy fun in the sun and the occasional consummation of their marriage. They were having a good time until Monday morning when John walked into their hotel room, where he found Michaela strangled on the floor.
Police arrested three hotel workers who, according to the latest development, were caught by Michaela in her room “after she returned for some biscuits to go with her tea”. It’s not clear how they got that information from her after her death.
The smallest consolation we can take is that John is not a suspect. That might be a little bit too much African honeymoon drama for us to handle right now.
