Soon after we published the story that property development tycoon, Rob Taylor, was suspected of having perished by suicide by leaping off Table Mountain, online conversations around the incident began to reveal a number of curious, if not unnerving details of the circumstances leading up to Taylor’s death.
Taylor became famous early in 2010 for spontaneously giving his multi-million Rand Audi R8 supercar to two car guards at the base of Table Mountain.
But a number of tweets, like this one, suggested that there was something more to Taylor’s death than a somewhat sudden, tragic suicide, which may have been closely linked to his unusual acts of generosity.
More tweets suggested that Taylor’s death had something to do with his great love for and interest in skydiving.
Taylor owned the Angel’s Way Farm in Eston, home to Skydive Durban, and was himself a PASA A License-qualified skydiver.

A source close to Taylor offered to anonymously clarify the deepening mystery around Taylor’s apparent suicide. They sent us this email [some information is redacted to protect the identity of sensitive parties].
He was a big fanatic when it came to skydiving and base jumps. So he planned for a year to do this “ultimate jump” off Table mountain. A jump that would give him an outer body and mind experience.
Apparently he had given away money to people and donated 5 planes to the skydive companies around SA – he had become a spiritual person and that is why he wanted the experience of that “ultimate jump”.
But yeah the one thing Rob did not want he people thinking it was a suicide – it was the ultimate leap that he wanted to experience!
Hope this clears up some of the stuff (and makes sense to why he also gave his R8 away) but apparently he was a very selfless man, and gave to people who needed it etc – money was not an object for him!
2oceansvibe has contacted another man who Taylor is alleged to have confided in regarding his planned jump – we are awaiting his comment.
