I’ve heard some incredible gaffes in my time, many of them from English football managers waxing lyrical on national television. You may be aware that ex-Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson once called Marcel Desailly a “lazy ni$@er” live on radio commentary. Or that Harry Redknapp told a reporter to “fu%k off” for suggesting he was a “wheeler-and-dealer” during a post-mach interview. Or maybe that Peter Crouch shouted the “c” word that was conveniently picked up by a nearby mic during a game. These are all marvellous slips of the tongue that really show the ‘humanness’ of some of the famed that we watch every week.
In this instance Alan Pardew is up there with the best. In the video ‘Pards’, who should not to be confused with Alan Partridge, is having a chinwag with fellow panellist Alan Hansen about Michael Essien’s physical prowess. The Ghanaian powerhouse, also known as The Bison, is shown tussling with Manchester City’s Ched Evans. Evans tries desperately hard to outmuscle Essien, but is no match for the Chelsea man. The former West Ham, Charlton and Southampton boss is first to admire Essien’s commanding qualities by letting slip a howler, which invoked several complaints to the BBC. Since his comment he has never featured on MOTD ever again. The hilarious thing about this, is that he tries so desperately hard to cover his tracks by continuing to talk utter codswallop after the slip. Stick to management Pards, although you weren’t the best at that either. (Please don’t employ him Mike Ashley, I’m begging you).
