The long and the short of it is that Shrien Dewani, the husband of the deceased, is alleged to have paid to have his wife murdered by the driver of the vehicle in which they were traveling at the time of her death. These details emerged in a plea bargain made by the driver with the public prosecutor. The driver, Zola Tongo, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Look, we all knew there was something potentially complicated and untoward about this whole debacle the moment the official version of events came to light.
Who takes a detour through Gugs on their way back the the Cape Grace Hotel from Somerset West? And why was the vehicle abandoned by the alleged hijackers after all of the nearby threats (aka males) were ejected from the vehicle, and Anni Dewani had been shot?
Nevertheless, we’ve been over this. You’ve all been over this already, at your office, at your dining room table.
There are a few sharp observations going around Twitter if you care to have a gander.
But I think I’ll leave the last word to Daily Maverick columnist, and all round stand-up human being, Sipho Hlongwane.
