In just six weeks, South Africa’s first mainstream online radio station has enjoyed over 2,500 downloads of its mobile streaming app. The app, which allows anyone with a smart phone (iPhone, Blackberry and Android) to listen to the radio station LIVE, has been rolled out to the iPad today. The latest update of the app is compatible with all iPads running the latest iOS4.2 software and, like it’s iPhone counterpart, is able to stream in the background while the user continues to operate the device.
Other Platforms
2oceansvibe Radio is now the only radio station in South Africa with streaming apps on all of these platforms*. And this is before we mention the new Facebook streaming app, and the listing of 2oceansvibe Radio on Tivoli Digital radios, Nokia Radio and the new MINI Countryman, the world’s first production car with built-in internet radio. The station is primarily available through it’s web browser offering, www.2oceansviberadio.com (click ‘Listen Live’), with 7,000 listners regularly tuning-in.

now with 2oceansvibe Radio
It’s quite sad that a station that plays music which people want to listen to, and delivers content that people really talk about, happens to be a revelation. Don’t you think? It turns out that people, if given the choice, prefer not to be spoken to like arseholes.
With associated brands including MWEB, Investec Asset Management, MINI, Puma and Vespa, it is quite clear that this high-LSM basket of opinion leaders has massive appeal.
Lineup
The station is currently broadcasting from 8am to 3pm every weekday, live from Cape Town’s trendy Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village. Richard Hardiman’s breakfast show (with Gen) runs from 8am to 12 and Luca Vincenzo’s lunch show (with Josie) runs from 12 to 3pm. These shows are then repeated until the next day with the drive show to come – possibly via Johannesburg 😉
The Friday lineup has Seth Rotherham and Bruce Good doing the breakfast show, lunch with Luca and then we pick up the pace a bit with DJ Sox from 3pm to 5pm and DJ Dean Fuel from 5pm to 7pm. CLICK HERE for more on our show lineup.
Daily regular slots include weather, world headlines, sport (with Ryan Scott) and surf report (with Chris and Spike from Wavescape). Specialist segments pepper the rest of the week including “Sex in The Mother City” with Dr D on Mondays, “G-Man’s School of Rock” and “What’s The Vibe In Jozi?” with Liza Kay on Wednesdays, “Spl!ng’s Movie Review” on Thursdays and “The Fashion Report” with La Muse (from Popyacollar)on Fridays
Guests
The station enjoys a myriad of exciting guests and has welcomed the likes of Peter Sarstedt, Arno Carstens, Freshly Ground, Graeme Smith, Mark Boucher, Jeannie D, John Smit, Jordan Belfort, Lyndall Jarvis, Lisa Cowley, Colin Moss, Ard Matthews, the cast of Spud, Bob Skinstad and many, many more. Duran Duran will be in the studio in December as well – just for spice. Oh, and Public Enemy. Seriously, there are so many it’s a bit of a joke. CLICK HERE for the 2oceansvibe Radio Facebook page, which includes hilarious photographs of all the celebrity guests.
Connectivity
While some cars like the new MINI Countryman and select BMW models are starting to include their own internet radio offering, most new cars sold today include an ‘AUX IN’ jack which let’s the user connect their smartphone (playing 2oceansvibe Radio app) to the car – broadcasting radio that you can relate to, in the comfort of your own motor vehicle! Pretty simple, hey? Welcome to the future! If your car doesn’t have an ‘AUX IN’ jack, then simply connect your phone in the same way that you would an iPod or walkman 😉
* All mobile app users are encouraged to check with their service provider to see if they might need a data bundle. The station users about 20Mb an hour and most of our listeners have opted for something similar to the Vodacom MyMeg600 data bundle – which offers 600Mb of data for R189 a month. Obviously the costs are zero if you have MWEB uncapped and you are using wi-fi on your device.
