Sir Alex Ferguson has achieved great things in English football and is arguably the greatest manager the game has ever seen. Jose Mourinho was quoted on Skysports today, saying: “This season I read the most intelligent quote. I can’t say it’s mine, but from Sir Alex Ferguson – the number one manager in the history of the Premier League – who said he doesn’t want to retire. That’s exactly what I want to say when I get to 60. I want to live my football life as long as I can.” Like him or not, you cannot help but admire Fergie for his impassioned example of managerial longevity.
For “The Special One” to make such an honest compliment certainly indicates Fergie’s stature within the sport.
Meet Frank McDougal: Scottish goal-scoring machine who played under Fergie when he was managing at Aberdeen in the 80s. The story is revealed in ‘McDou-GOAL! The Frank McDougall Story’, the player’s new autobiography. The player recounts the tale of him receiving the baleful, infamous, hairdryer treatment from Ferguson. Any normal human being would nod their head and get on with their job. Not McDougal.
“I lashed out. It was far from a bout-winning punch – more a ‘half-dig’,” McDougal said. “I caught him on the side of the face and he went down like a ton of bricks. Of all the stupid things I had done in my life, putting Fergie on his arse had just stormed straight into the charts at No 1.”
That’s one audacious son-of-a-gun. Not sure the same crossed Becks’ mind after he felt that boot fly into his temple.
