Much has been reported recently about the American political landscape. Sure, they don’t have “politicians” like Julius Malema to dominate the headlines with nonsense but the likes of Christine O’Donnell and the Teaparty are making a damn fine effort.
Essentially, with the midterms just behind them, Americans have shown that they are growing increasingly angry that Barack Obama and the Democrats haven’t been able to, in two years, undo almost a decade of mismanagement.
The stigma afforded to anything remotely Obama-ish is so rife that Texans have recently become progressively more vocal about their blinding hatred of free universal healthcare. Because, you know, fuck the poor. Obama could, at this point, offer a million dollars to every American and they would stand up and say, “No! Socialism!”
Recently a story grabbed my attention and made the dismissal of free healthcare seem completely sane. Teapartyers in Fountain Hills, Arizona have objected to a proposition that would ensure curbside recycling because the measure removes their choice over who picks up their trash.
A dramatic flier was circulating around Fountain Hills announcing, “The Hills Will Have Eyes,” and, “Fountain Hills Green Police” checked residents’ garbage and recyclables, and as a result, “you are wanted for questioning.”
Am I the only one that thinks something seems seriously wrong when people are arguing against recycling just because they don’t like the president?
Democrat Ginny Dickey, a supporter of the program, sums it up:
“It seems counterintuitive, but in order for this proposal to pass, I believe I had to downplay the benefits of recycling. When ideology prevents rational discussion of a really pretty mundane topic, trash, there is no perspective. Everything is suspect, which paralyzes us.”
