This weekend I ate five boerie rolls after the Springboks beat Ireland on Saturday evening. Needless to say my personal achievement felt slightly less impressive come Sunday evening, when I read that Edison Pena had completed a marathon after being confined in a mineshaft for 69 days.
The man nicknamed “The Runner” was invited to take part in the marathon and is an avid fan of Elvis Presley as demonstrated by his Bieberesque performance at a press conference after the race.
Pena’s training methods were unorthodox to say the least, as he ran an 11km route through the mine’s tunnels just to keep himself sane. He completed the marathon in 5 hours 40 minutes and 51 seconds, finishing three and a half hours after the winner, Ethiopian Gebre Gebremariam (I’m sure we can cut Pena some slack here though).
His achievement has made me aspire to (maybe) run next year’s 2 Oceans marathon half-marathon. As I type this I’m thinking of ways I can enclose myself in my neighbour’s borehole.
