Colin Montgomerie has never won a major in his career, but as captain of the Europeans, this is his moment. His team won 14.5 to America’s 13.5 and after the frustrations of the rain and water-logged course on Friday morning, the culmination was an unbelievable vibe. Even Miguel Angel Jiminez pulled out his signature cigar as he watched the final matches finish.
The Americans have not won in Europe since 1993 and that barren spell continues. It was an awesome fightback from the Yanks, particularly by 22-year-old Rickie Fowler (huge BMT), who pulled back three in the final three holes to halve with Edoardo Molinari.
An epic end to a golfing tradition of huge significance. It’s Guinness over Bud tonight (thank God), but well in to both teams for an awesome climax.
