With the likes of the UK shutting down the FM signal completely, combined with our increased need for non-stop internet, it’s no wonder Subaru are following in Audi’s tracks by developing cars with built-in 3G.
The Subaru Outback, a “crossover” SUV and yuppie icon that seems naked without a ski rack on top and several Whole Foods grocery bags in the backseat, is now offering wireless connectivity with Autonet Mobile in-car Internet service for its 2011 incarnation. This means the Outback is the latest in a parade of models to feature built-in Internet connectivity.
“Subaru Mobile Internet easily allows users to check e-mail, surf the Web or listen to Internet radio and even stream video and post to social networking sites,” a release stated Friday. “Outback passengers can check weather and traffic, download hiking trails, and even reserve a campsite while they’re on the road.”
Audi have already brought out vehicles which double up as massive mobile hotspots, in the form of the Audi A8, which now comes with optional 3G. Check it out – there is a sim card slot in the dashboard!
Not only can passengers connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, the driver can also get directions from the in-car navigation system that taps on Google Earth. This is combined with a street atlas, as well as both online and offline content for a complete satnav solution. All that while you’re listen to internet radio at the same time!
