Bafana Bafana needs a lot of help to get through to the next round of the World Cup. Some might even say they need a miracle.
Others, however, might say that that all they need is a little muti (traditional medicine).
Our favourite news service, the foul-mouthed News24, came up with this gem of a paragraph in this story.
In order to increase Bafana Bafana’s chances of making it through the first round of the tournament, the first to be played on the African continent, people are burning, brewing and smoking.
Burning, brewing and smoking? Normal enough. But there are a few details.
Traditionalists believe a mixture of herbs, plants and animal parts, such as vulture brains and aloe, can be used to change luck, heal sickness or enhance performance.
Sometimes, muti can contain human body parts.
Hmmm. Now there’s a bit of a sticking point. There’s no doubt that Teko Modise needs to get a pair of calves, and urgently, but Matthew Booth is probably the only Bafana player willing to grind his opponents bones for bread.
So while we all send Bafana our best vibes, the question has to be, “What are YOU smoking?”
