You might want to check out this site. They display pics of man-made solutions to technical problems in and around the house. Usually things that they could buy, but they are either obsessed with DIY or prefer to save money and do it themselves. Ie. Marcus Brain (The Kitesurfer) to a tee.
Virtually all of them are ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.
Like this ceiling fan. As good as the real thing!

It should be noted at this point that Marcus Brain MADE his first kitesurfing board. And a potato gun (cannon). And he made beer (in a bath) at home.
