We’ve featured the odd TED talk here on 2oceansvibe before. Whether you know about TED or not, I’ve got a feeling you will enjoy them.
In a nutshell, TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is an “invitation-only event where the world’s leading thinkers and doers gather to find inspiration. This annual conference brings together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers and challenges them to give the talk oftheir lives. Talks from the conference are now made available online, for free, and have been watched more than 35 million times worldwide.”
Below Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity.
I strongly urge you to watch this.
I support his vibe there 100%.
I have been particularly outspoken about the education system for many years. I think it is absolute bullshit that the most stressful times of my (and many other people I know) life were in my teens, as I studied for exams with the constant fear of “failure” hanging over me.
Look, I did fine, but I must ask if it is entirely necessary for a 15/16/17 year old child to think about suicide during study time (even if it is just for a fleeting moment)?
How is that normal? Why were there no systems in place to channel whatever it was/is that I’m good at instead of terrifying me with life ruin if I didn’t learn my science formulas parrot fashion?
And even when I did take a step (potentially) in the right direction and joined “computer studies” class, I had to drop that – because Tweed possessed the people/teaching skills of a 500Kb flash drive. Such aggression. Such anger. What are you up to now? Still “putting” people “through the wall?”
Pfft. What a sham. What a shame.
Good work, Sir Ken Robinson – indeed, changes need to be made.
