So Twitter is coming along nicely here in South Africa. We’re forming our own cute little networks and followers and tweets and twats, building up followers and finding out about new people and things to follow on a daily basis. Some recent additions of mine that I am following include Steve Buscemi and the Gumball 3000 Rally .
In fact.
Actually.
So anyway I saw a lovely little article on Lifehacker, giving some great examples of how you can use Twitter usefully, rather than just reporting on your bowel movements and this constant bestowing of “kudos ” upon others.
While we’re at it, what is this current OBSESSION with the word “kudos ?” Jesus – it’s like when you pick up a new cool sounding word as a kid and then you overuse it and kill it. That’s what the geeks have done with “kudos.” It’s a pity – it was such a great word when used sparingly.
May I just take this moment to say that there is NOTHING more obvious and revealing than forced word use. Nor more emboerrissing.
God, it’s so emboer-boer.
Mboert.
Brrrt!
Back to the point of this article. Lifehacker put together some useful Twitter Twots. Here are a couple:
1. Instant, Real-Time Search Results
The real-time search applies to so much more. If the signal on my cell phone goes out, I check Twitter to see if there’s some sort of AT&T outage in my area. If I want to know what people are saying about something important to me, I hit up Twitter. What you get is like a centralized, searchable, real-time comment-thread for everything. Yes, like all comment threads, you’ll find a good amount of crap. But that doesn’t render the entire thread worthless. Bookmark Twitter Search (here) now and use it next time Google or your favorite blog search engine fails you. [It’s far more instant and finger-on-the-pulse. I use it the whole time – Seth]
2. Ask Questions, Get Answers
Provided you have enough followers (with enough knowledge), Twitter is also a powerful place to ask questions and get answers. Before I started writing this post, for example, I asked my followers what they think Twitter’s best uses areâ€â€the answers to which helped inform this entire post.
Follow that link to check the others out. I must say, I was pretty impressed the other day when I sent out a twat asking if anyone had any reliable contacts at Vespa. Five minutes later I received a direct tweet with Mike at Vespa at the Waterfront’s name and number, with a “tell him you’re a friend of mine” to boot!
Beautiful vibe! I was pretty impressed. And you can do the same I’m sure. You must just learn to use that particular part of your brain which allows you to come up with ideas like that. Instead of using it to remember and overuse words that don’t come naturally to you. Kudos to Twitter!
